Why the Y?
That was the question addressed at an awareness-raising session for invited politicians Friday at the Reading branch of the YMCA, 631 Washington St.
The answer: The branch is deemed an integral part of the city, providing a variety of vital social services that might not be able to continue in a 1912 six-story building that needs an estimated $5 million in improvements, a new roof, scores of windows and an elaborate heating system.
